Queen’s baton relay to depart from Wangaratta’s sporting hub.
Staff and patrons at Wangaratta Indoor Sports & Aquatic Centre are thrilled that the local leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay will launch from the centre, carried by popular local Olympian swimmer Belinda Hocking.
Maree Warnett, Centre manager, says the Queen’s Baton Relay is an exciting event for all members of the Wangaratta community and she is looking forward to seeing local residents line the streets for the momentous occasion.
“We are especially pleased that Belinda has been chosen to commence the relay and from our centre – as she has a strong connection with the YMCA, and Wangaratta locals generally.
“Often on her visits to visit family and friends in Wangaratta, Belinda will take the opportunity to visit her old kindergarten Coronation as well as St Bernards and Galen. She has a strong affinity with Wang and is honoured to be carrying the baton,” says Ms Warnett.
The Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre will host a Gymnastics display outside the front of the centre and Belinda will take the time to meet fans prior to the baton departure at 5.52pm.
“We also have on display some of the Commonwealth Games banners, made by local school children and community organisations.”
The general public is invited to join in the fun of the event, and watch as the Belinda and the Baton and the accompanying convoy make their way down Schilling Drive and then towards Apex Park for the community celebration.
