Dancers raise $10,390 for local cause
Thirteen local couples were presented to an adoring capacity crowd at the new Oaks Wangaratta function room on Saturday, raising over $10,000 which will be used to implement the YMCA Evolve program in local primary schools.
The A1 Tyrepower Dancing with the Mastars, conducted by staff and volunteers from the Wangaratta Indoor Sports & Aquatic Centre, attracted around 260 people who were treated to a classical style debutante ball, only the participants ranged in age from 22 years to over 50.
Anthony Lavars, Acting Assistant Manager of the YMCA Youth Leadership & Development Unit, presented an insight to the crowd of the potential impact of the YMCA Evolve program in schools. The program is designed to aid personal development in Grade 6 students, helping them to build resilience and communication strategies.
Mr Lavars said the YMCA Evolve team was thrilled about bringing the program to the Wangaratta community. He also commented on the outstanding success of the Dancing with the Mastars event. Visiting from Melbourne, Mr Lavars had never seen anything like this event.
“The sense of community and purpose in the room all night was so impressive. The organisers efforts and passion that poured into the event could really be seen, the Wangaratta YMCA and the volunteers deserve a massive congratulations,” he said.
Community Development and Communications Specialist Trish Storer, said the event had again exceeded all expectations.
“The training started 8 weeks ago and the debutantes are always nervous and self-conscious at first, but it is incredible to see the transformation. Stepping out of their comfort zone, they gradually relaxed and you could see the buzz they got from performing the dances in front of their family and friends.”
Major sponsors of the event Kylie and Andrew Coatsworth said they were happy to have the opportunity to sponsor the event that supported a cause close to their hearts. They said the new venue at Oaks was a resounding success and provided a beautiful backdrop for the dancers.
