Fourteen local couples have been finetuning their dancing moves in readiness for the A1 Tyrepower Dancing with the Mastars adult debutante ball, to be held on the 17th November at Oaks Wangaratta, the new function space at the Wangaratta Turf Club.
Dance teacher Debbie Ravida says the couples have “improved out of sight” in recent training sessions, showing greater confidence and flair.
“Each year when the dancers start they are often very nervous and self-conscious, but always they gradually gain confidence and then really enjoy the whole experience a lot more.”
Ms Ravida added that many of the dancers might be learning to dance for the very first time. “It can be a real leap outside of your comfort zone especially for adults.”
Trish Storer, Wangaratta YMCA Community Development Officer, says this is one of the many reasons that the organisers are so enthusiastic about the Dancing with the Mastars event.
“The main focus of the event is to raise money to help local families who are in some way disadvantaged, but another great consequence of the event is seeing a wide range of adults who challenge themselves to learn something new.”
“With three weeks to go we are now seeing very obvious growth in confidence amongst the dancers. That sense of achievement that they are feeling is really quite beautiful.”
Ms Storer said tickets to the event, which is open to the general public, are now available for purchase. Tickets are $40 per head which includes a light supper and drinks are available at bar prices. All proceeds of A1 Tyrepower Dancing with the Mastars this year will be directed to the implementation of YMCA Evolve in local primary schools, a program aimed at improving children’s resilience and self-awareness.
Enquiries about the event can be directed to Trish Storer or Maree Warnett at the YMCA on 57221723.
